Pam Battin-Sacks
Lead Teacher, Nursery Program III

I am delighted to be joining CSDC as the Nursery 3 Lead Teacher! I have worked with children and families for 31 years as an early childhood educator, parent educator, and child and family therapist. For the past 11 years I have been the Preschool Director of the early childhood program at Temple Israel in Portsmouth, NH. I hold a Masters degree in early childhood education from Temple University.

A strong professional interest of mine is integrating the arts, in particular creative drama and movement, throughout the curriculum. I believe the arts are a powerful way of promoting self-confidence, critical thinking, creativity, and communication skills in children. I also enjoy working with parents about their hopes, dreams, and concerns they have for their children.

I live in Portsmouth, NH with my husband Steve. He works as a staff attorney for the National Education Assoc. Our daughter, Rachel, is at Sarah Lawrence College in NY. As a family we all share a strong interest in the theater: my husband and I met in a theatre production, our daughter is a theatre major, and I presently study acting and perform in Newburyport. Other favorite activities of mine are gardening, reading, and spending time with family and friends.

Diane Bertrand
Lead Teacher, Infant Program

I have a B.S. in Early Childhood Education from UNH- Granite State College. I also hold a credential as a Lead Teacher (Level 4) from the Child Development Bureau of NH. I began working here at CSDC in 1988 and have been an infant/toddler teacher since then, participating in the “looping” process between the two classrooms.

My professional interests include collaborating with other teachers to develop and implement age-appropriate activities that focus on emergent curriculum for infants and toddlers. I am especially interested in mentoring college interns and adults in learning more respectful ways to interact with infants as well as promoting and facilitating the use of signed English with infants and toddlers as a way to enhance young children’s communication skills.

My personal interests include hiking, camping, kayaking, going on road trips and performing random acts of kindness.

Nicole Cavicchi, M.Ed.
Early Childhood Teacher, Kindergarten

I completed a B.S. in Family Studies (Young Child) and a Psychology minor in 1996 and my M.Ed. in Early Childhood Education with special education concentration in 2002, both at UNH. I have taught infants through six year olds since I began my teaching career in 1995. I participated in the “looping” process at CSDC (1997-2004) while teaching in the Infant/Toddler program. I have been teaching in Kindergarten since 2001.p>

My professional interests include: supporting young children’s interests in exploring their environments through project work and documentation, literacy and mathematical development in early childhood, investigating light, technology and photography with young children and mentoring UNH students as they embark on their educational careers.

I have earned Highly Qualified Teacher (HQT) status from the NH Department of Education to accompany my NH state teaching license for Kindergarten through Grade 3. Lead Teacher Level 4 and Trainer, Mentor, Faculty credentials from the state of NH Child Development Bureau.

Sandy Cormier
Lead Teacher, Toddler Classroom

I completed my B.S. in Family Studies with a Nursery School – Kindergarten concentration in 1990 from UNH. Since then I have taken a few graduate courses and plan on pursuing my Master’s Degree in the near future. I am a member of NAEYC and EEIN as well as a member of the Special Rights Committee here at the center

I have been teaching here at the CSDC for the past seventeen years. For the first sixteen years I taught in the Preschool I classroom with three and four year old children. In August of 2006 I looped to the Toddler Classroom where I am currently teaching. Every day is a new adventure as the toddlers are continuously changing.

My professional interests include the Specials Rights of all children, diversity and anti-bias curriculum. I am committed to partnering with parents when it comes to the care and education of their children. Communication between home and school on a daily basis is very important to me. Here at the center we utilize emergent curriculum, long term investigations and documentation to support children’s natural curiosity and inquiry. We believe that children have the right to explore their natural environment, self identity, self-expression and celebrate their individuality and uniqueness.

I received my New Hampshire Early Learning Credential for Lead Teacher Level four and will be applying for the Trainer, Faculty, Mentor Credential.

Brooke Davino
Assistant Teacher, Nursery Programs

I recently graduated in May 2007 with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Family Studies at UNH. As an undergrad I interned in the infant classroom for two semesters and also in the Preschool II classroom for one semester. Since then I have led Kindergarten Camp, worked as an assistant teacher in Preschool I and am now working as an assistant teacher in all three nursery programs. I have already begun working on my Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education, with an option in Special Needs, at UNH which I plan to receive in May 2009.

Growing up I always had an interest in working with young children. I find it rewarding to know that each day I have an impact on how each child learns. I believe that the early years of a child’s development are the most crucial time to be taught because these concepts and ideas are the ones that stay with them for a lifetime!

Last March I studied the Early Childhood Education system in Southern France. During the trip I had the opportunity to observe first hand how young children are taught in another country. The main difference that interested me was that all Early Childhood Education in France is free to the public!

Beth Gachowski
Lead Teacher, Nursery Programs I& II

I am so excited to be getting back to teaching! I spent the last 6 ½ years as the Director of The Children’s Center in Portland Maine. I learned so much as a Director and being on the administrative end, I gained new insights into how to work best with young children. Prior to my work at T.C.C., I was a teacher at a lovely Reggio/Project Approach based program in San Francisco.

I received my M.A in Early Childhood Education from San Francisco University. My undergraduate degree was in Speech Pathology and Audiology from Boston University. I have found both of my educational experiences to come in very handy in the classroom.

I live in Arundel Maine with my husband Steve and our two young children Elias and Isabel. Our practice children are a set of Labradors named Amos and Nellie. As a family we enjoy going to the beach, hearing live music, gardening, taking walks and visiting farms.

Nicole C. Marsh
Early Childhood Teacher, Infant/Toddler Programs

I have been teaching infants and toddlers for the past 17 ½ years. I began my experience in Merrimack, NH with a part time job, which eventually became full time and two classes at Nashua High Vocational Center. I continued my education at Notre Dame College in Manchester NH and earned a B.A. in Child Development with a minor in Special Education. In the midst of earning my B.A. I moved to Somersworth, NH and began work at Wentworth Douglass Hospital Early Learning Center for 8 ½ years. During this time I continue to my educational experience toward my Master Degree in Child Development and Special Education.

My professional interests include using American Sign Language as a means of communicating with young children. I feel that we communicate in many ways, one of which is verbal skills. As young children develop their verbal skills, sign language is a way they can communicate with others before they are ready to use words.
